Seemed Kinda Like Real Life to Me

I enjoyed this movie a lot. Basically, it's about this guy Dan, a woman he meets, and the complications that ensue. It's also about the adult children of a family who come home for a visit. That part was really real to me. It reminded of me what it's like when I go see my family. Dan had to sleep in the room with the washer and dryer. For me, I had to sleep in the room with the incredibly noisy fish tank. Everyone is on top of everyone. Everyone can hear everything. The visit revolves around meals and rituals like crossword puzzle wars of the sexes and the family football game.
There's a simple premise to the movie that keeps things moving and suspenseful in a light romantic comedy way. I guess I knew how it was going to end, but it's still interesting to see how we're going to get there.
There are lots of good actors giving nice performances. Interesting characters are just hanging around--like the brother-in-law whose name I don't even remember who says that love finds you as opposed to the other way around. I like Dianne Wiest, but woudln't it be nice to have a mom in a movie who looked like a mom? Not everyone has facelifts, great haircuts, and style. Many moms have beauty parlor hair and wear sweat pants--but not in Hollywood, I guess. And I didn't hate Dane Cook. What a feat that is!
This reminded me a lot of the "The Family Stone" but there was one big difference--this movie wasn't totally full of crap. I guess they were always trying to get me to like this quirky family, but I didn't feel all manipulated.
It was nice to see a commercial, conventional movie that had a good--not corny--heart. |
