Dalton Trumbo one of Hollywood's most successful screenwriters was blacklisted by the evil senator McCarthy in the 1950's along with several others and actors. Peter Askin adapts Christopher Trumbo's play more or less and creates a fascinating doc about the writer. With letters read by Joan Allen, Brian Dennehy, Michael Douglas, Liam Neeson and Nathan Lane et al, we delve into the life of the man who gave the line "I'm Spartacus" to the world. We also see newsreel footage of the trials including the likes of Walt Disney who all shunned communism at its heyday, even Lucille Ball was accused. It's painful to see Kirk Douglas barely able to speak though you can understand him and it's great to hear the actors reading from several of his hundreds of letters written during the period. This is definitely worth a look. |
