Excellent casting, wonderful cinematography, intelligent script. A soul tweaking morality play imbedded in a true-to-form Western genre that has broad appeal. In other words...it's a very cool flick! A great two hours of entertainment.
Crowe and Bale are, as usual, superb. "Ben Wade" and "Dan Evans" develop an intriguing relationship while they bluster in and out of the shades of gray between right and wrong, good and evil, that ultimately delves into what really lies in two strong men's souls. Foster, Lerman and Fonda are stand-outs. The explosive undercurrent of lawless violence keeps you on the edge of your seat while the moral struggles keep your brain churning. Juicy roles for all involved. Mangold created a gem here. This movie will provoke more than a few hours of post cinema cafe-chatter.
Forget any preconceived notions about remakes and go enjoy this movie for the excellent showcase of quality entertainment it is. |
