Focus on the acting not the sex

Lust, Caution, is not as LOU LUMENICK of the New York Post puts it "could have done with a lot more lust and a lot less caution." or how Owen Gleiberman of the Entertainment Weekly describes it as "Lust, Caution wants us to feel the erotic ping of buttoned-up people ripping open those buttons, but too often it's the film's drama that's under wraps."
First, the group of student might seen to be unrealistic or not too interesting but it represents the view of many students and youngsters at that time towards the Japanese and its puppet government who were occupying China. Their naïve-ness and their wish to make contribution to the war is what Lee Ang wants us to notice.
The time leading up to the explicit screen should be focus on Tang Wei performance from naive first year student to Mrs Mak. As well as her love/ hate feelings toward Tong Leung.
The sex scenes should not well be focus on the sex. If you focus on the body gesture of the sex scene, you will notice it is really about Tony Leung's character opening himself up. (Note that he is the head of a spy organization and is under contain assassination and he does not trust anyone, not even his wife.)
To enjoy this film, you must not focus on the explicit sex screen, instead understand the characters and focus on their acting. I think this is one of the best films Lee Ang has done. |
