Here is a film that actually utilizes all of the right components for a decent little shocker. The writing and direction is tight, putting us firmly on the edge of our seat in many scenes. Penny, (Rachel Miner) the lead character is afraid of cars since both her parents were killed in a car crash--Penny survived--when she was little. Now, she is asked to face her fears, as she is encouraged to get into a car and drive up to the mountains where the crash occured in order to move on with her life. Alone with her therapist (Mimi Rogers) they hit a hitchhiker on a lonely stretch of road; the hitchhiker is unharmed, it seems, so they pick up this person, their face obscured by the hood of their coat. Then they drive this person to the middle of nowhere to drop them off. The hitchhiker doesn't speak; and after they've let this person out of their car...terror ensues. See...the hitchhiker has punctured one of the tires on the car, and now the two women are stranded in the woods. And this hitchhiker, it seems, is a relative of Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers...most of the action takes place inside a car, and talk about claustrophobic! All in all, this is a brilliantly done movie with all the elements in place to make you genuinely care about what happens to Penny, instead of the usual body count type gorefest that has infiltrated the horror genre. This one stands out as memorable, as well as chilling. See it if you are a fan of chilling, suspense thrillers. |
