Good Old Fashioned Suspense

"The Strangers" managed to scare the crap out of the audience I saw it with at The Grove in L.A. The director quotes liberally from Carpenter's "Halloween" and Kubrick's "The Shining" and uses every horror movie device available and still comes up with a nice little flick that will make your heart race as though you were on a roller coaster.
Unlike last year's "Vacancy," which started great and quickly lost momentum, "The Strangers" gets to the creepiness at just the right time and doesn't let up until a standard horror movie ending (which is why I don't rate the movie higher.)
My one complaint is: TOO MUCH HAND-HELD CAMERA!!! Put the camera on a dolly or on a tripod and let the actors and the story make me nervous without also getting nauseous from the shaking screen.
"The Strangers" is good old fashioned fun. Lots of suspense, lots of "jump" scenes and outstanding use of sound to help scare the daylights out of anyone who might not see the next scare coming around the corner.
If you're a young man looking for a good movie to take a girl to, this is it. She'll be holding on for dear life from about twenty minutes in until the very end. Like I said, just as good as a roller coaster. |
