Very well made and profundly important

They say that if you don't know history you're doomed to repeat it. For that reason this movie is profoundly important for us as Americans to go see, given the current state of affairs in the world.
The movie tells the true story of Charlie Wilson, a US congressman of little consequence who almost single handedly helped fund and arm the Mujahideen during the war in Afghanistan against the Russians in the 1980s. The movie is very very well done, from the writing to the directing to the acting, but in particular Tom Hanks and Philip Seymore Hofman turn in great performances. The movie is great, entertaining and funny while remaining informative.
What's really amazing about this movie is that when dealing with such potentially politically charged topics it manages to stay neutral. It's really a conversation starter and not preachy, although there will probably be some people that still manage to get offended but that's, of course, completely unavoidable. Without invoking 9/11 or the war in Iraq the movie conveys the idea that there are consequences for our actions and involvement abroad in the Middle East. Without going into specifics and ruining the movie I'll just say that it's very applicable to our situation today.
If you like learning about history or fascinating true stories, I highly recommend this movie. |
