Worst Movie I've Seen in a Very Long Time

This movie had no redeeming qualities. One of the most annoying things was the fake deep south accents coming from Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts.

In East Texas, we add r's to our words. We don't drop them. That's Georgia and Mississippi, not Texas. In East Texas we say things like "peetzer" and "weender" for pizza and window. Congressman Charlie Wilson was from Lufkin, TX. He wasn't from Atlanta. Herring (Julia Robert's part) was from Houston. She shouldn't have sounded like she was from Mississippi.

Both Herring and Wilson are alive and were available to the actors. Hanks met with Wilson to buy the rights to the script. He should have known better. Hanks had plenty of opportunity to learn from the subject. There was no excuse for his performance.

Next on my list of dislikes was the directing. For some unknown reason, we watched watched the swinging backside of Wilson's secretary go down the hall. At first I thought that perhaps we were seeing her through the eyes of Wilson, but the we see her go up to Wilson to hand something to him. So if he wasn't behind her eyeing her behind, why were we?

The swinging butt wasn't the worst of the offenses. This movie was so chopped up, that I guess most of it must have hit the editing room floor. The movie was very short. It was basically, Wilson is a womanizer who drinks. A rich girlfriend in Houston asks him to go to Afghanistan to help beat the "Commies". He goes and sees some kids with shot off arms. He goes back to D.C. and asks for money and weapons. He gets Israelis and Arabs to provide the weapons. Afghans win. The End.

Along with the bad acting, directing, editing and writing, there are factual errors. Massoud was not the primary recipient of our tax dollars. He received only 1% of the money, compared to Hekmatyar, who bombed Kabul after the Soviets left, and received 40% of the money we sent there. It was Hekmatyar who along with Bin Laden built the terrorist training camps.

The factual errors would have bothered me more if this movie had been exciting to watch. Instead, it was a waste of my time and money.
