Where did this movie go wrong?

There comes a point after seeing the "Reservation Road" trailer and staring at the screen for an extra five seconds, that one can't help but say "Wow, this movie will win best picture." However, having now seen the movie, I am inclined to nominate "Reservation Road" for another award, "Biggest Disappointment of the Year".
What makes this film worth watching is what it could have been, not anything that actually appears on the screen. The performances, particularly Joaquin Phoenix's, are somewhat of a marvel, but nothing that anyone will remember come next year. The one upside to that is that Mark Ruffalo, who is as open as a dull book in this movie, will get a chance to rebound without having people remember this catastrophe of a performance.
All-in-all, "Reservation Road", whether by Oscarlust, or by plot overdevelopment, becomes so contrived and so manipulated by coincidences that destroy its believability, that by the end of the film, the only thing left to do is ask yourself, "What went wrong?" |
