I saw a preview screening of Fred Clause the week it released. Honestly, for something that is sort of intended as a kids movie, if the kids aren't laughing, there is something wrong. It was a pretty quiet theatre for a comedy. Nearly every gag revolves around, "Little people are funny." All the others were a reprise of Vince Vaughn's character in Swingers. The CGI'd little people looked awkward. Even though it has a terrific cast, this was completely a paycheck movie for all of them. The story didn't make a whole lots of sense, either -- Tim Allen did a much funnier verion of "I can't believe I have to be Santa" in The Santa Clause. Bottom line? Skip this stinker and rent The Santa Clause or Scrooged instead if you want a holiday family comedy. |
