Why Hollywood....Why?

****SPOILERS AHEAD******

I'm a filmmaker living in MI. I ventured out today on X-mas Day to see AvP2 before heading to the family dinner.
The first AvP disappointed greatly. So is this one better than the first? Yes. But that's only because after the the first movie, it can ONLY get better, albeit just barely.
The story starts promisingly. A predator spaceship carrying the body of a fallen predator.(why do we still call them "predators"? they are obviously some sort of alien race with their own name/species) Anyway, an alien bursts from the chest of the dead predator, which ends up being an alien-predator hybrid. It wreaks havoc on the ship, said ship crashes in CO, some containers holding facehuggers break open, and the aliens begin to infest a couple people. The dying pilot of the predator ship places a distress call which reaches the predator home planet somewhere, and one predator puts on his ass-kicking suit and heads to Earth to clean up the mess.
So far so......so.
We get to know what will obviously be the "hero" human characters. A bunch of no-name actors who really can't act. But this isn't about acting, it's about aliens and predators beating the ***** out of each other. Right?
I was hoping to see this entire small town overrun with aliens, people getting offed left and right, etc. But leave it to the filmmakers to take what SEEMS to be the set up of a large scale battle royale between aliens-humans-predator and find a way to have to evacuate the whole town so all that is left are some aliens, the ONE predator, a few military guys, and of course, our rag-tag group of humans(that you want so bad to die a horrible, horrible death)
There are so many nods to all of the alien/predator films it becomes more of an homage film, rather that standing on its own.
We have a tough military woman(Ripley), we have some military personnel(Space Marines), we have a small girl(Newt), etc...there is even a character names Dallas!!!..ugh.
I'm assuming the predator ship at the films opening is the same ship from the end of the first film. So why it crashes in CO after taking off from the arctic makes a lot of non-sense.
There are a couple of nifty kill scenes, but it just wasn't enough to save the film. When the aliens are CG they move like monsters on a mission, scurrying across walls and ceilings. But when they are simply people in latex suits, their movements are, well, more human and slow. I kept thinking to myself, wow, if these things moved as fast as they did in CG scenes, not one of these idiots would stand a chance. Luckily they picked up Ms. Military lady, so she can drive them to safety in a tank and then fly them to safety in a helicopter. Thank God for plot contrivances!
Oh well, maybe I'm over critical, or maybe I just expected more.
I'm sure there will be people out there who think this movie is "AWESOME!", but I'm not one of 'em.
Take it for what it is, but I won't be recommending this movie to anyone.
I'm going to see Sweeney Todd next. I'm sure it will fair better.

:d:
