This is a movie that will make you feel upset, depressed, and unsettled, even after it is over. It is designed to do just that. Over the years, Horror movies have become less about scares and more about gore. This movie brings the scares back by being extremely unsettling all the way through without showing much violence on the screen.
Implying the violence works in a movie like this and that's why it makes it so disturbing! Your imagination can cook up far worse things than you would ever see on a movie. The director forces you to use your imagination by keeping the violence just barely out of the camera. The director also does something far more disturbing throughout the movie. He includes you in it. Paul (one of the psychos) looks directly at you during some key scenes of the film nad makes comments just to you. The effect is bone-chilling and you are immediately sucked into the film. This is definitely something not all audience members will be able to stand.
The actors in this movie give excellent and believable performances. Tim Roth is an example of a helpless man trying to save his family. Naomi Watts gives a truly emotional performance and you really feel for her character as the film goes on. Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet are extremely scary. The real stand out performance here is Devon Gearhart (who plays the son). It is truly amazing to see a child actor pour that much emotion into his role and I hope his career goes far.
Overall, I would defintely not recommend this to just anybody! It is definitely going to be hated by a lot of people as you can see on the user reviews. For horror fans or regular movie fans who want to see something that will get underneath their skin and stay there for a long time, this is the movie to check out. Recommended for those strong enough to stand it.
