A good film, but not nearly as good as the book

I had only read half of the book before watching the movie. That made me dislike the first half of the movie because of deviations from the book, but the second half of the film was enjoyable to me.
This means that the movie is pretty well made, but the book is simply too good to be turned into a film of the same value. "Kite Runner" is a very descriptive, lyrical, and rather long novel. I admit the difficulty in fitting all 400 pages in a 2-hour movie, but I think some important points were left out including Assef's interest in Hitler.
What bothered me most was the poor choice of characters who differed from what described in the book. Both Baba and Assef are described as strong and huge men in the book, whereas they appear slim in the movie. Assef is blond in the book, but he has black hair in the film. Ali is an old, crippled, and scary person in the book but quite opposite in the film. Hassan is hairlipped in the book, but fine in the movie and so his surgery which was another important event was left out in the movie. But overall, the movie followed the plot closely and the actors did a good job. I liked it and highly recommend it. |
