This is the movie I like the most for the past few years.
Although it is a foreign language film, good part of it is in English and the foreign language part flows nicely into it.
The scenery in the film oh, it is a must see if you love to travel. It has the Afghan at its prime, and the movie gave you the taste of Afghan life, culture when it was good. It also shows the dreaded Afghan state under Taliban. A large part of the movie was shot in Xinjiang, China. The grand mountain scenery makes any avid traveler drool. Visual impression of San Francisco becomes pale in comparison.
The scenes of kite fighting are just fascinating and unforgettable. You feel elated set free while watching this. It is worth cost of the ticket to watch that kite flying tournament.
I also like the story. Even though it about a young person's life, you feel for the characters, and understand the power of guilt, loyalty, love that drove the main story line. In the movie, you will also appreciate the traditional moral and family value. Many people are saint like except their wrong doing, like Baba and Amir. But you understand and don't want to criticize.
I like the acting especially that of the young Hassan and baba. You do feel the friendship among the children.
In all it is a magnificent movie that deserves viewing and better rating than what the critics gave. Actually , I agree with Roger Ebert many times when his opinion is very different from the rest of the critics. |
