What a disappointment! I have enjoyed the work of all of the actors in this film, so my expectations were high. The hype on this film is misleading. First, the casting was dreadful. Vanessa Redgrave's character was supposed to be in her sixties. She's in her seventies and looks it which tainted the reality of the character. Clare Danes, playing the young Vanessa, had no resemblance to her (which gave it no credibility) and was truly awful in this role. She had no chemistry with her leading men which gave them nothing to work with and it showed. The character is supposed to make a living as a singer and has a mediocre voice. Who would hire her? There is an awkward moment where she sings to her best friend, Lila, at her wedding, and Harris (the doctor) gets up and goes to the stage to sing with her. Why did he do it? Patrick Harris (a young Paul Newman clone) was great in Little Children, but would have done better with another actress playing Ann. Since the casting and direction was so bad, the flashbacks were not convincing. The best thing about this movie was the casting of Meryl Streep and her daughter as the young and older Lila. The breathtaking scenery made watching this disaster bearable.
