A film can never replicate a novel completely, of course, but I was extremely disappointed with some of the script changes in "Evening." First, in the film Harris is depicted as an available bachelor versus being the engaged, committed man of the novel. When Ann talks of making a "mistake" in the book, she is referring to her love affair with an unavailable man and the havoc her decision takes on her lifelong emotions. Next, the film adds tension by suddenly making Lila an insecure bride who has a crush on Harris. In the book, part of the beauty of Lila's unquestionable love for her husband is the fact that it is a perfect juxtaposition for Ann's arbitrary nature.
Third, two of Ann's children are not even in the film version. This is a shame because her son is a nice offset for the three girls.
I will stick to the novel on this one!!! |
