Family-friendly Stephen Chow flick

Chow took a different formula in his latest movie; This CGI laden, E.T. inspired flick is kid-friendly. It is a family drama circling around the finding of a mysterious 'toy'.

This toy, a CGI alien, has an extraordinary power of renewing damaged stuffs (even a rotten apple). Through this toy the family (which consists of only a father and a son) learns a valuable lesson.

Chow nevertheless still retains his slapstick humor which I found not particularly funny anymore (but I still guarantee some hearty laughs during the viewing). The movie is a bit cliche-ridden and tedious to follow in some scenes.

The movie still has its power, with visual effects, though still cannot be compared with Hollywood's, that indicate the sheer development of Hongkong film industry, and the actress (believe me) who played the son Dicky. She is the gem on the screen amidst the CGI (much like LaBeouf in TF). She is a talented young performer who acted with charm. It also has a tear-jerking moment towards the end which, at least, could make your girlfriend cry and a brief terrifying scene.

CJ7 is a picture, ignoring its flaws, with a few moral lessons enjoyed best by keeping your brain shut.
