Incredible movie, and this comes from someone who couldn't enjoy The Cell. Catinca Untaru as Alexandra is a revelation; it is difficult to tell if she is acting or simply being a child, but this is the single most natural, mesmerizing performance by a child I have ever seen in a movie. Credit to Tarsem for capturing this incredible presence.
The storyline (including the metastory) is nothing special, but the movie works and rises above the simple plot because of the breath-taking visuals and genuine, captivating performances by Lee Pace and the aforementioned Untaru. This is a movie which is destined to be underappreciated on release, but beloved in the years to come after more viewers have time to discover it. It is not an accessible, easily marketable movie, but those who take the time to delve into this film will be rewarded with a transcendent experience. |
