Loved it - a parent's perspective

I took my 5 and a half year old son to see this yesterday and thought I'd add my two cents. Most everything about the plot/effects has been said, but here's another parental perspective... I agree with those who have said this is not for very small children who scare easily. I would say age 7 or 8 would be a general guideline, but my 5 year old really loves being scared and even at the scariest moments (trust me, even I was at the edge of my seats, clawing the armrests at times) he was howling with delight. So I suppose it depends on the kid. As others have said, there are some moments that are emotionally upsetting (about the impending divorce of the parents) but for me the worst moment (SPOILER ALERT) was when Jared stabs his "father", knowing he's really the ogre (though the rest of his family looks on with horror, not knowing he's really the ogre) - somewhat disturbing. The effects are great, the story is great, the acting is great, blah blah blah - you've read it all in the reviews before mine...my review is just to say that this is a great family film that is like those from when I was a kid - not sugar-coated or sanitized. There are really terrifying moments and some funny ones as well, and eventually the family comes together and becomes a stronger unit (which is a nice sub-message) I highly recommend it. |
