The story is pretty straightforward and you get the idea from the trailers. Nicholas Cage is always good but in this role he doesn't get to be great. This is pretty much a formula movie with some nice scenes in Thailand. The problem is that the story doesn't quiiiiiite work. There's not enough in it to explain his change of heart and falling for a drug store clerk...and then becoming devoted to his new assistant and trainee. It goes against everything you learn and see about him in the early part of the film without really developing enough reason for the change. However, it's mildly interesting and not too bad, not too great. If you're like me and you're often in the mood to just see a movie, one that doesn't need to be an academy award winner, then this will be OK. If time is precious and you don't go to many movies you can do better. |
