I can understand how making a movie based off of a book can be difficult but this is an example of the worst way to approach it
The story seemed a bit rushed as you are quickly pulled from one scene to the next often with very little warning and for a book that built suspense pretty well it seems a shame that the movie took such a fast pace
Not only are you frantically being pushed through the story and it takes less than 20 minutes before the movie completely conflicts with the book (i.e. Movie the house has a phone whereas in the book they have no phone)
Not that the movie was trying to recreate the book anyway since there are more scenes added into the story than are actually taken from the book itself
Also, if I may offer my own opinion, the rules of the house state in the book that Mr White (Tin Man) "Might" let rule two slide where as in the movie he will absolutely let it slide, I might be reading too much into that but it always gave a certain sense of danger to me because it was never a sure thing.
Another let down was the basement. Most of the story in the book is set in the basement and for good reason, atmosphere. In the movie its barely noticed as anything special and is zipped through in a brief 30 minute window, which considering how much is going on, isn't much time to really get the feeling of this shifting, malevolent entity
All in all its a bad movie. The house could've been portrayed much better, the basement was at best disappointing, the story was unfamiliar to fans of the book, the character development was almost non-existent and the biggest flaw was the pace of the movie. Given the time and attention the book deserved the story could've been smoother and the characters more likable it would've made a bad movie good, but as it stands it simply makes a good book a very bad movie.
