Even if I wasn't a Trekkie....

When I first saw Star Trek on Friday, I came out giving the film two thumbs up. Now three days later after thinking about what I saw, I have to downgrade my original assessment. The casual moviegoer in me loved the film when I just turn off my brain. The TREKKIE in me on the other hand is smashing the walls in anger. The story has WAY too many plotholes in it. Even if you're not a Trekkie, they're pretty obvious. Let's count them shall we?

1) Kirk being promoted to Captain after almost being kicked out of the academy and not even graduating yet! Pike even promoting him to first officer was way too much of a stretch. I don't care how skilled you are, they are NOT going to promote someone who hasn't finished the academy yet to full Captain, bypassing six, (count em!) SIX ranks! WOW!

2) If Nero had such a grudge for the Federation because it let Romulus get destroyed, once he went back in time, wouldn't it have made sense for him to go to Romulus in the past and at least try to warn them of the supernova 129 years in the future??? Reimagining or no, I would think if Nero was that heartbroken over the loss of his pregnant wife and all of his people and he had a chance no matter how slim of saving them in the future, he would've taken it! I mean it's not like temporal events are unknown to the Star Trek universe and I don't think the Romulans have a temporal prime directive! Reimagining or not, cmon....

3) Kirk finding Spock on the ice planet was WAY too coincidental. What are the odds really?

4) If Spock knew that Vulcan was in trouble and he knew there was a Federation outpost a few miles away, why didn't he try to get help!?!?!??! Even if the drill jammed communications, why didn't Spock even try?! That was his home with his mother on it!

5) Spock throws Kirk off the ship for mutiny? Doesn't the Enterprise have a brig???? Last time I checked, if someone gets arrested for mutiny in this time frame, they get court-martialed. In the kinder gentler 23rd century, they get thrown off the ship!? WTF!?

6) Kirk's master-plan with his genius IQ is to attack the Romulan ship which has been proven to destroy Federation vessels easily, ALONE? Yet he chastises Spock's plan to get reenforcements??? Huh??? I thought this was Star Trek where they outsmarted their enemies. I like a good space battle like the next dude, but what separates Star Trek from Star Wars is the fact that Star Trek is required to use intelligence to solve a problem.

7) The Enterprise, the flagship of the Federation being entirely staffed by kids who haven't even graduated from the academy. You mean to tell me there was not ONE senior officer around besides Spock? This ties in with Argument number one.

8) The Transwarp thing. Ok I realize this argument is maybe a little too Trekkie, but anyone that's taken basic physics in school or has even watched ONE episode of Star Trek knows that for Kirk and Scotty to make it onboard the Enterprise is impossible. Kirk had been on that planet for hours and the Enterprise was going Warp 4 maybe?
Let's just say for the sake of argument it was going Warp 1 and Kirk was only on the planet for one hour. If Warp is a measure of the speed of light like how it is in the shows and previous movies, that would mean that Scotty's transporter has a range of over 660 MILLION miles. That's like further than the distance from Earth to Jupiter!!
If that's the case, WHY EVEN HAVE STARSHIPS!?!??!!?? Even in the Next Generation the Enterprise had to be somewhat closer than that to use the transporters!!! And I guarantee you, the Enterprise was moving much faster than Warp 1 and Kirk was on that planet longer than an hour in the movie!
I could understand if Kirk and Scotty were on another ship and they were shadowing the Enterprise, that would've made sense, but they were on the planet and the Enterprise had at least an hour's head start before they even thought of trying to use Scotty's device!!! Not even by the time of Voyager has the Federation accomplished such a feat but they want me to believe that they did it in Kirk's time BEFORE he was even a Captain!?

Okay, except for the plot-holes, the movie was very entertaining. The entire cast did a WONDERFUL job with the characters I thought and the acting was top notch. The visuals to me were amazing. I loved how the bridge looked. It looked almost like Heaven which was pretty cool to me. I also liked the retro-laser gun sounds. A lot of people hated it I realize that, but I thought it was pretty nifty.
As far as a good action/science fiction flick with top notch acting, Star Trek is excellent. But as far as a Star Trek film with a STORY....well...that has a lot to be desired. I just hope, if they decide to make a sequel, they'll fix things and make it better.
I'm still on the fence as to whether they've completely invalidated the past 40 years of story though. Old Spock being around with the new Spock is a paradox which means the original story MIGHT exist. I keep hearing differing views on this. I hope i'm not wrong and they didn't completely piss away 40 YEARS of story.
