This is a surprisingly tightly written murder mystery set in the gay community of Washington D.C. Manny is a very handsome struggling artist with a wide circle of friends and lovers. He is a bit of an exhibitionist who likes to go into chat rooms on line and show off his stellar hunky buffness to all comers. Unfortunately, many of the guys who have have had close "biblical contact" with Manny are dropping like flies. A serial killer is slicing his way through gay DC and Manny is the common thread to all of them. Everyone is a suspect, his exes, his friends and strangers. A gay wise-guy detective, Hamilton, is assigned to guard Manny and crack the case. He eventually cracks both it and Manny as well along the way. The role of the detective is played by a very swarthy, hairy Middle Eastern actor. This egregious miscasting of the detective character stands out like a sore thumb in the movie. The actor playing the role is competent enough but you simply never believe that an uber-golden boy WASP like Manny would have anything do with him. Opposites may attract on paper but this stretches one's credulity to the limit. Some of their more intimate scenes together were simply hard to watch because they were so mismatched.
Still, the excellent plot and other characters' hard work make up for the miscasting and the very indie quality of the movie. It is certainly worth renting on a Friday night. |
