From the opening, The Kingdom grabs you with a very creative “catching you up to speed” part of the movie where they talk about the history of an oil partnership between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia. After that, the movie doesn’t seem to let you go either.
The movie is based in Saudi Arabia, where U.S. citizens reside in Oil Camps. These U.S. oil workers who work in Saudi Arabia are to be fully protected in these compounds by the Saudi national guard. A radical Islamist Abu Hamza, (who actually is a real person in jail) masterminds a terrorist effort that kills these Americans. So Jamie Foxx and his FBI team sneak off to Saudi Arabia to investigate this mass genocide.
The Kingdom definitely delivers, and does so without getting political, which Hollywood seems to be doing in regards to terrorism. Instead you see unlikely relationships built, what seems to be realistic glimpses of what life is like there, intense action scenes, and a subtle yet powerful message.
There were a few things I didn’t like, such as Jennifer Garner (I’m not a fan), the acting was decent, and some parts of the story weren’t all that believable. But overall they did a fine job between balancing on that thin line between realism and entertainment. And that’s exactly what a movie is supposed to do, entertain you. This was one of the better movies I’ve seen this year. |
