Excellent French film
by James G (movies profile)

Generally speaking I don't like French films - they are too self-indulgent, overly expressionistic to the point of absurdity, and they lack a good linear narrative (of course there are exceptions, Luc Besson being most notable). However, here we have a great blend of French expressionism with good old US narrative with the result being an intriguing mystery that slowly unfolds. Great performances by Juliette Binoche (looking very much like Tina Fey, but you'll remember her best from The English Patient), the always tantilizing John Turturro as a poetry spouting psycho killer, and a brief cameo from Nick Notle who does a surprisingly subtle job, enrich this film. If the film has a fault, it is the pre teen sex escapades of Sara Forestier and Tom Riley - their acting is great, but the script is strangely asexual as their love affair unfolds. |
