My daughters' spring break started today and I wanted to see this movie with them. After reading A.O. Scott's review in the NYTimes, I was starting to rethink that. But we went anyway and it turned out to be quite good, much better than the review indicated. Jim Carrey was not over the top as Horton and was very charming in the role. The animation was spectacular, especially the clover searching scene. There were only a handful of jokes that only adults would understand, which was nice. My favorite character, and my daughters' as well, was the little yellow fluff ball Katie. No dialogue, but has the cutest shtick I've ever seen in a cartoon character.
Does it do justice to Dr. Seuss? No, but that's beside the point. Use this as an opportunity to buy the book, read it with your children and discuss. |
