"Horton Hears A Who" was pretty mediocre at best. There were some parts that were charming, but overall, it just felt too empty, too silly and too overstretched to be a success.
For a movie starring such talented comics like Jim Carrey and Steve Carell, two actors who I am big fans of, the humor is very flat. Carrey's schtick, while entertaining gets annoying after a while. And I just found the humor overall to be very dull.
The story was very empty. It felt like the movie was taking a short storybook and putting as much filler as they can so they can fit a feature length running time. The story never really got interesting until toward the end of the movie. There was too much of Jim Carrey's funny voices (I know. I didn't think there can be too much of that either.) and too many moments of pointless antics and music sequences that seemed to serve no point. And Carol Burnett plays a character who I just don't understand. She makes such a big deal about destroying the speck. But the film never really goes into why she wants the speck destroyed so badly.
The animaton was good. The look of the film had a Dr. Seuss feel to it. The film also had some very likeable characters. It's hard not to like Horton. But I just wish the story would have gone further, the villains a bit more developed and motivated, and the humor a bit sharper. "Horton Hears A Who" was wacky, zany, silly but unfortunately, not always funny. However, for kids who like wacky animated characters with funny voices who don't really pay attention to character development, this film can definately provide entertainment. There is also a very nice message in this movie. I just think this movie could have been a lot better. |
