I just went to watch this movie and did not really expect too much. Neither did I read a review nor did I see a trailer.
I think some viewers are disappointed when they realized that this movie is not a just a comedy.
This is a thoughtful movie about the magician Buck Howard, past his peak when he appeared in famous TV shows he is now performing in small theaters across the country and has his most admiring fans in small cities somewhere in the Midwest. John Malkovich could have been no better choice to play this aging, compulsive mentalist who does not have family or any friends and only lives to entertain his audience He eventually by serendipity becomes famous again but then looses it all again when he is not able to perform his signature trick. At the end he is be back in the small theaters in the Midwest. The story is told by his road manager, who at the beginning of the movie decided to leave law school to become a writer. That's it ! A very, very simple story. Still I have not been felt so inspired by any movie this year. For me it is the movie of the year, go watch it.
