I'm a big Woody Allen fan. And I really like his London-based films. This film really felt, at least to me, that Allen was trying to essentially remake "Crimes and Misdemeanors" for a younger set. I know what he trying to do here, and I appreciate it.
As other reviewers have noted, there is real chemistry between Farrell and McGregor as brothers. And the ending sequence is plausible and very well acted.
Allen is quite adept at exploring philosphical and moral issues on film. I felt that he kind of falls short in this case, especially given my feelings I stated above in relation to "Crimes..." I thought his exploration of morality was deeper in that film as well as "Match Point."
Overall, I think Allen scores with this film, though not dramatcially as he might have. While his love for New York City cannot be matched, he displays an admiration, respect, and even love for London.
Like I said, there are worse ways to spend your time, and there are worse Allen films. But this work provides better fodder for most of what's out in the cineplex right now. It should also provide good fodder for intelligent conversation after leaving said cineplex. makes me wish I hadn't seen it alone. |
