I saw this because I'm a big Norah Jones fan...let me clarify that....of her music.
Director Wong Kar Wai from Hong Kong is talented. But not on this film, which is his first American movie. In this repeatedly stalling road trip across the great, empty landscape foreign filmmakers often mistake for the USA, Wong's signature tear smeared visuals accidentally approach campy comedy.
Distracting from the cohesiveness of the piece is the fact that it's largely improvisational.
Jones is only so-so in her acting debut, portraying a troubled young girl with wanderlust named "Elizabeth". Portman turns in a lousy performance, to be blunt.
This movie got a crappy reception at Cannes and probably will from the public as well. It would be a good depressing movie for a rainy day at home for free, not in a theater. |
