Rather than personally attacking the principle in this film I'll take the novel approach of actually reviewing The Hammer. I found this film comedically refreshing in light a of flood of comedic clunkers that have been released from major studios over the past year (Knocked Up, Superbad, Dan in Reallife, Juno and a few others excepted of course). With The Hammer's witty dialog and funny visual jokes this small indie film clearly knocks out the likes of budget heavyweights like Norbit and Goodluck Chuck.
It's a surprisingly heart felt story about a man, who is used to being on the loosing end, pushing through and fighting for a better life, literally. Adam Carolla as Jerry Ferro the sharp tongued washed up boxer is extremely funny. His performance comes across slightly lethargic at times but it fits the down turn Jerry Ferro is facing in life. Jerry's pursuit of boxing on the Olympic team is filled with comedy gold. The romantic subplot with Lindsay played by Heather Juergensen is sweet, touching and plays a great juxtaposition the boxing construction worker Ferro. It doesn't have the polish of a major studio film but it doesn't need it. This hilarious little film filled wonderful characters like Ferro's sidekick Ozzy and that all you need for an enjoyable comic feature like the The Hammer. Highly Recommended!!! |
