My boyfriend and I saw Control last night at Shattuck Cinemas in Berkeley and were not let down. The two leads Sam Riley and Samantha Morton truly gave Oscar-worthy performances. For anyone who has ever seen Ian Curtis perform, I think that Sam Riley's singing and dancing are uncannily accurate. I loved how the film was in black and white... it set a different tone than it would have had in color, a very sad tone. The music was excellent... if you are a Joy Division fan, you're in for a treat. If you haven't heard the music, I think you'll find that you can appreciate its impact even if its not your style of music. I didn't know that despair had a sound until I heard a Joy Division song.
I have one criticism, and that is with the U.S. distributors. I couldn't find where Control was playing anywhere in the U.S. and they weren't listed on the movie web site. I was lucky to find a random post by someone who mentioned that it was playing in San Francisco and Berkeley this week. I'm going to assume that there were others out there trying to figure out how they could catch a showing. |
