Not a boxer's story, but a writer's. I left feeling blah. Jackson was exceptional but the story lacks punch. As a film about the homeless it may have worked but that part is poorly resolved. The writer becomes the hero but did nothing for the homeless boxer he befriended; appalling! It was almost perverted to be a film about a successful writer who corrects his mistakes (rah, rah) while the poor, homeless boxer is left in the gutter and we are supposed to feel good at the end because the writer gets the girl? Bllsht!!! The director has a sick sense of redemption. The faux-hero writer drops the homeless boxer off at the home of his ex-wife at the end. Are we supposed to believe this downtrodden alcoholic is going to knock on the door after 20 years and be welcomed back into suburbia and comfort? That's what we are left to believe. What a fkn crock! |
