True, the film is a bit soapy. The material is a little melodramatic, but its acted so superbly that it takes away any cheesy element and you can just immerse yourself in it. Gary Marshall is known for directing this sappy, pluck-at-the heart-strings drivel, but to his credit he does it well. He gets good performances out of his actresses and makes the stories he directs relatable to modern audiences.
If you're a film buff who enjoys SOLID performances, this is the movie for you. It's a little to smarmy to be Oscar material, with a definitely sappy ending that might illicit a few tears. But Jane Fonda and Felicity Huffman are both in their element here and deliver solid, subtle performances. They are quite enjoyable to watch and make very strong choices. The roles are very nuanced. But the real surprise here is Lindsay Lohan. I say this with my mouth agape, slack-jawed in total surprise. I have newfound respect for Lohan, she delivers a TERRIFIC performance and holds her own against her more experienced Oscar-nominated counterparts. She really runs the gamut of emotions and does a fine job of creating many layers to her troubled character. When we find out why it is she has come to be such a trouble-maker, your heart will break. Consider me a new fan. Lohan far exceeds her teenybopper counterparts in style, substance, and talent. Bravo! |
