So I am sitting in this small, but relatively crowded theatre with a bunch of other old folks who are fixedly staring at the screen, seemingly having forgotten how to breathe. "Wow", I find myself thinking, "Seymour Hoffman is abso-tutely magnficent in this film. Forget 'Capote'. This role is the culmination of his career."Wow", I find myself thinking, "Ethan Hawke, slacker dude, has come a long way. Even though he showed me some definite chops when he lit it up with Denzel in 'Training Day,' this role is the culmination of his career. "wow", I find myself thinking, "Marisa Tomeai is givng an amazingly subtle, but great performance." "Wow", I find myself thinking, "Albert Finney is just amazing here. Ho dodes this guy kepp getting better and better?" "Wow", I find myself thinking, "Do I detect some sort of pattern here?
I do. I do. Out of the seven or eight thousand films I have watched in my half century plus, this might be top to bottom the best acted film I have ever seen. This is just a flawless masterpiece of serious folks film; so well-written, directed and edited, that there ain't an ounce of fat on this beast. After the film ended people just sat there stunned, slowing gathering their wits and their belongings. We then slowly filed out of the movie theatre, like a bunch of church-goers who had finally seen the light. Wow. |
