The director has found some fascinating material. If you like documentaries about interesting people (a la early Errol Morris... Vernon and Gates of Heaven), then you will love Surfwise. If you consider yourself radical, you will enjoy Surfwise. If you like surfing, you will probably like it, but wish there was more surfing. The Paskowitz family is an interesting collection of humans, worthy of the camera's microscope. There is nothing super-human about them. This film could have easily glorified this family for 90 minutes. It could have just as easily ridiculed them for 90 minutes. I'm glad it did both. |
