Was there a better male performance in the year 2007 than Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will be Blood. No. Was there a better male performance this decade? No.
Daniel Day-Lewis plays Daniel Plainview. He is offered to drill for oil by a young man by Paul Sunday at his family's land. Plainview and his son and partner, H.W. Plainview (Dillon Frasier). He meets Paul's brother, Eli Sunday, a fake evangelist. He wants Plainview to help out his church with the money that he's going to make. This movie follows Plainview's selfishness, greed, and evil.
Daniel Day-Lewis is perfect in every sense. It is the role of hte lifetime. If Daniel Day-Lewis doesn't win the best actor oscar, I won't believe in the oscars ever again. Day-Lewis IS Plainview, a modern day satan. A greedy, selfish, cold-hearted, Texas oilman. Perfect role for a perfect actor. Best performance of the decade.
The supporting performances are pretty good. Paul Dano, from Little Miss Sunshine, plays both Paul and Eli Sunday. It gets confusing when you first see Eli. There are many theories on why Dano played both characters. People have said that the actor who played Paul didn't show up. Some people thought that Paul and Eli were the same person. They are interesting theories. Either way, he has an interesting performance. Also, Dillion Frasier is creepy as H.W. Plainview.
The direction is fascinating. This is Paul Thomas Anderson's best movie. I love a lot of shots of Day-Lewis that he does cleverly. He slowly zooms up to Day-Lewis' face when he is looking pretty close to the camera. He looks like pure evil. If you look at the movie poster, you'll see what I'm talking about. Also, Robert Elswit's cinematography is fascinating and will dazzle your eyes. Very well done.
The music is perfect for this kind of movie. If you listen to the trailer, you'll hear the score and it is unique, weird, loud, and odd, just like the movie. It also has some great numbers to build up the suspense, such as when the oil blasts up over the drill, very appropiate. And the ending music adds up the stangeness of the ending.
My problem is the ending. It isn't a huge problem, but it could've been a little better. I thought that there was much more to tell and a lot more to explain. It would have been interesting on how Plainview would've died or more examples that show off how selfish and how greedy he is.
Still, this is epic moviemaking at it's finest. Perfect lead role, great directing and cinematography, and great music choices. Without a doubt, one of the best movies of 2007. |
