Disappointing...Bad is the wrong word

Obviously creating a baseline for movies such as the previous two Hannibal Lecter flicks is difficult. But the stretch of immagination and execution of this film is simply poor. The biggest flaw here is there is no connection between the Hannibal we see and Anthony Hopkins' creation that scared the be-jesus out of me when I was a kid. "Hannibal Rising" puts Lecter in the spotlight and we learn too much about him, honestly. In the previous films we are left to wonder exactly the emotions Lecter is feeling, how he could commit such brutal slayings. This gave him that aire of ruthless indifference to his meticulously planned killings. Here, we see none of this. There is no fear, only mild carnage, no suspense and empty emotion.
The plot is meddlesome and contrived, although it does give you some rudamentary sense of why Lecter grows into the killer he becomes. It was a difficult task and the directors/writers were not up to the challenge. I would highly encourage you to skip this movie and keep your "Silence of the Lambs" memories in check. |
