I write this in order to refute the bored writer's gratuitous F grading on every score and to counteract its effect on the overall score. Perhaps the writer is unfamiliar with the subject matter.
This is a charming rendition having among its cast of characters some of Moliere's most memorable creations, including the leading man (ostensibly, Moliere) being a skewed version of the con man, Tartuffe. Where the character Tartuffe represents unmitigated evil however, this false priest is quite likable, with decent, if unintentional, intentions. Where the original Elmire was Tartuffe's foil and enemy sworn to protect her home and her family, this Elmire succumbs to Tartuffo's charms quite easily. So it becomes a love story with a happy ending, as her cuckolded husband, the extremely put-upon Orgon, finally realized the error of his ways in pursuing young Marquises and neglecting his fine wife.
Silly - but charming nevertheless. If you like the period, don't miss the movie! |
