Jules Verne's classic comes to life again, and you know what? It does exactly what a summer movie should do -- thrill you.
Summer flicks should by definition be FUN. Remember the summer blockbusters of your childhood? This is precisely how "Journey To the Centre of the Earth" plays out.
Eric Brevig, the filmographer behind "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids", directed this popcorn adventure flick with that same light touch, and the visuals must look even more amazing in IMAX format (I saw it on regular 35mm). I would suggest watching it thusly, especially for the cave scenes.
Yes, Ebert is correct to say it has a bare-bones plot, but because it's timed at 1:32, it doesn't drag at all. It also is extremely family-friendly, with not an inappropriate word uttered, and with scenes more exciting than frightening.
If one could liken this film it would be as a mesh between Indiana Jones meets King Kong meets Jurassic Park.
For Summer '08, it'll do just fine. |
