"You know you're in trouble when...

...looking at the boobs of an animated character is the highlight of a movie." This is a quote from my husband which pretty much sums it up.
My husband fell asleep about halfway through. I, personally, managed to stay awake but felt like it would have been more enjoyable if it were half as long. I didn't mentally redecorate my house as I've done on some worse movies (Muppets: Treasure Island springs to mind), but I wouldn't have turned down a good book and a little booklight.
You know how in Shrek, pretty much everything is funny, even the little stuff in the background? I always admire movies and shows where it's obvious that the writers worked hard on every detail so that you enjoy it on every level. I didn't know how to describe how unfunny this one was, even though we did laugh out loud a few times, until I read a review today that said it has some "good one-liners" but was otherwise uninspired. Bingo!
That said, the kids really enjoyed it. There was no giggling in the car afterward quoting lines and talking about this character or that, but no real boredom either (well, maybe a little when my 6yo climbed into my lap - he normally only does this if he is less than entranced but he didn't say "let's go home, Mom, I'm bored" as he's done in the past). This is one where only one parent should take the kids and expect to suffer through, or rent later so you can take a little nap while they are watching.
I actually had a thought at one point during the movie that I could have written most of it, and trust me, nobody would laugh during a movie screenwritten by me! |
