This picture answers why these acts go unpunished in conversations with its "hero" - a man with a conscience who takes a stand against the church and who happens to be a member of the clergy himself. We're reminded that from the top down, the Roman Catholic hierarchy believes itself ordained by the Almighty and therefore insulated from and not subject to, the same laws that apply to the rest of us. And apparently it regards violations of celibacy the same no matter whether a child is involved. Meanwhile serial molesters win the hearts and minds of unsuspecting parents, who are then doomed to shattering awakenings once they learn the cost of trust and faith. Their guilt and rage is hard to watch. Its also illuminates the warped mind of one priest - himself apparently an abuse victim. To perpetrate these crimes he must be unable to connect to their devastating consequences, the same dissociation is apparent in contemporary interviews as he attempts to characterize his acts. Wrenching. |
