This was a retelling of a story that most people are pretty familiar with, done with an attempt to reach mass audiences and still hold true to most of the basics of the story. Of course you get some extras thrown in to make some added story lines (yeah, it's Hollywood).
Making this all work was not an easy feat. However, they did it very, very well. The movie has history, drama and even comedy in an appropriate and entertaining mix.
The only piece I wish they would have done a little different is Mary's labor scene (we really didn't need several shots of her lifting her legs). This is not as bad as it sounds, but it may make parents with small kids a bit uncomfortable.
I really liked the mix of actors, though I wasn't too familiar with most of them. We've seen the nativity scene in other movies, but this is the first time I've seen this story covered so well.
I would take recommend this for all ages. Definitely see it before Christmas to see how this all got started. |
