I am a big fan of the Coen's, I love thier movies "Fargo", "O' Brother Where Art Though?" and "Blood Simple". They are all such great and innovative progressive films. Their new one on the other hand is a big downer. :(
Yes, everythng is executed beautifully, cinematography, acting are all wonderful, For about 2/3 of the way through it, I realized it wasn't going anywhere and I started to dislike immensly what I was looking at. The story has no pay off because there is no redemption. The bad guys get away with everything and they're viewed as almost unstoppable. I was so angered by this film that I couldn't sleep plus it was so depressing! I didn't even pay for this film, thank God.
The question is, why would anyone want to tell this story? I love Cormac MacCarthy's "The Road", (also bleak and depressing but I couildn't stop reading it. It was written almost poetic and yes, beautiful), but without having read this book that the work is based on, the subject matter is so mordid, bleak, desolate and dark, though most of the film is shot in blinding broad daylight, for my dollar, that's not entertainement.
I would not want to tell a story, even faithfully, if it wasn't going come to an important conclusion. But instead float on it's own ugly randomness, Beware of this film, it is a waste of time. |
