Quite simply, a brilliant movie that is nearly perfect. In front of the camera, the better acting Affleck (Casey) was clearly in his realm as the gritty local from "Southie". The always underutilized and grossly underappreciated Ed Harris was nothing short of incredible. Every character actor present that played an adversary was perfectly cast and masterfully acted. Bravo.
As for the films direction; Ben Affleck stepped up with a bang. The way he frames his shots is superb and the overall direction was - honestly -worthy of an Oscar nomination. If I had to be uber critical, I'd only say the Ed Harris "rooftop" scene was a bit drawn out and labored, complete with a dying man narrative that came perilously close to feeling a little TNT/midnight movie-ish.
Now, for those naysaying this movie; I notice a steady drip of complaints about language and graphics in the movie. Well, this story would not and could not have been so earnestly told without that healthy dose of reality, no matter how gruesome it be. Also, there are far too many people complaining about what an horrible actor that Ben Affleck is. Here's a spoiler alert; BEN AFFLECK DOESN'T APPEAR IN THIS MOVIE (I shout for emphasis). He directs it. Perfectly, I might add.
Great movie, if you enjoy the cinema as an art form. If you're looking to simply feel good or kill a little time, see something a little lighter. You may feel the need to shower twice to get the stench of this movie off of you, however saying this only offers further punctuation to what a perfect film that Ben Affleck made. |
