The Coming of Galactus is one of the greatest stories in comics history. The giant planet eating menace that has been leaving lifeless husks of planets in his wake since the beginning of the universe. How is he handled? Is he a towering giant that the entire Fantastic Four engage in heated battle alongside the Silver Surfer who through the compassion of Sue Richards has seen how humanity should survive? Nope....he is a giant space tornado that makes a brief appearence towards the very end of the film.
The Surfer himself, while looking great, was handled quite poorly. He is imbued with the power cosmic. A fraction of a fraction given to him by mighty Galactus. It has nothing at all to do with his board. So that's another bit of silliness thrown in for no good reason.
Dr Doom....he shouldn't have even been in the movie. Vince McMahon would make a better Doom than Julian.
The wedding of Sue and Reed...should also not have been in this movie.
The first 20 minutes should have been devoted to the Watcher and his brief origin followed by his warning of the arrival of Galactus. The next 30 should have been the arrival and battle between the Surfer and the Fantastic 4 until Sue convinces him to rebel against Galactus.
The final 40-50 minutes should have been Galactus arriving in his giant ship, the Fantastic 4 and the Surfer battling him until they are near death. With the Watcher finally informing Reed of the ultimate weapon on board Galactus' ship and Reed's journey to and through the ship to retreive the weapon. Galactus should have then agreed to leave and punished his hearld by abolishing him to exile on Earth.
Instead we get this slop of a film with disjointed scenes made for showcasing special effects. With the final idiotic bit of The Surfer blowing up inside of the Galactus tornado and destroying him. If the Surfer could have done this why would he have served Galactus and led him to eat planets for years as his hearld? Why not just destroy Galactus straight away and end the whole thing immediately?
Really really poorly done and extremely disappointing to anyone who is a true fan of the Fantastic Four. |
