I don't get it

I like Sean Penn. He's a good actor and he seems like he is a man of his own mind. But this movie is so Hollywood and just stupid.
First of all the movie was too long and kind of boring.
Plus I think it totally missed the point of a sad true story of this misguided young man. Instead of exploring his self-centered rejection of human beings, it romanticizes his anti-social self pity. We are manipulated into thinking that he is likeable and "normal" even though his actions are borderline sociopathic.
I guess we were supposed to be won over by Emile Hirsch's performance, but I found his character grandiose, selfish, and not-at-all charming. I got tired of watching his ecstacic face as he jumped into a lake or paddled his kayak. It takes more than breaking an Abercrombie & Fitch model out of his chest-waxing routine to create a real person that I am going to care about.
There is so much to explore in this story, but this movie found every way to avoid that. Disappointing. |
