As an Iranian who actually lived through the same issues as portrayed in this film (had a secular progessive uncle executed, my aunt imprisoned for 5 years, the firends of my father mass executed by the Islamic regime, and lived through the horros of war and oppression of the people between 1980-1988) I found the book and the film to be a very accurate portayal of life in Iran. As one of the most anti-war Iranian academics specialized in Iranian studies in the United States, I did not find this movie to be politically motivated in any way. Rather it illustrated the courage of the director in not hiding the truth about the bestiality of the Iranian regime, in fear of her argument sbeing used by neocons etc. for supporting the war effort. It should be noted that the suppression of leftists in Iran in the said period was quite agreable to the Reagan administration.
But aside from that I found the movie itself to be very touching. The style of the animation was quite innovative with the black and white painting stark contrasts that fit the story line, and I actually found the movie to be better structured than the books. However the books provide a better overview of the background events.
Overall great movie. Would highly recommend it. |
