Innovative animation; compelling coming-of-age

I wouldn't necessarily say "brilliant" like some Yahoo! users, but this movie is touching and smart and offers a unique twist on the coming-of-age tale. We get to see what the revolution was like in Iran in the late 70s and early 80s from a rare first-person perspective, while we also witness a young girl's struggle to come to terms with her identity.
The animation is spartan but often whimsical and charming. The stark imagery adds to the emotional power of the story.
The ending is not as clean as I would have liked but the uncertainty lets one know that the journey will involve many more complications and personal awakenings for the protagonist. After all, she lived to develop this series and movie. |
