Had Potential, but....

I enjoy the occassional zombie flick and was curious when I saw it advertised on my digital cable pay per view.
What was good:
1. This movie was obviously shot on a low budet, but the director managed to take advantage of this by giving it that "shot by a camcorder/documentary" feel, similar to the original "Texas Chain Saw Massacre", "Last House on the Left", "Hills Have Eyes", etc.
2. The effects and action sequences were pretty good and didn't get to cartoonishly gory like some zombie films tend to lean towards. However, the camera became too jittery in some scenes, making it hard to discern what was happening.
3. The overall story line was a little corny, but the director did a pretty good job of making the deep woods setting creepy and believable.
What was bad:
1. This movie had one of the worst endings I have ever seen! The few characters that you actually begin to follow and care about (either positively or negatively) just seem to fade away in a blurry, unbelievably fizzled out showdown with a few zombies.
2. The characters and acting are good and believable in some scenes, but then are horrible in others. The stereotypical hippy chick is by far the most corny and cliché of the bunch. In one scene, the group is eating for what seems to be the first time in a few days. She spits out some ham that's in her sandwich claiming to be a vegan (I thought this was a perfect opportunity to turn her into a zombie later and then show her ironically munching on someone), but as I mentioned in 1. above, the story dramatically deteriated at the end.
I can't recommend this flick mainly because of the ending. My mouth is still open thinkking about how bad it was... |
